I did something bad today. I took money that I probably should have spent on supplies for holiday gifts, or perhaps even the gifts themselves, and instead spent it on some old crafting magazines.
I rationalize it by telling myself (and the rest of the world) that I'll probably get a load of good ideas from the magazine, not just for additional gifts but for decorations for the apartment, or things I might be able to sell for a little extra cash at craft fairs. My biggest regret is that I didn't have more money to spend, or I'd have come out of there with about as many magazines as I could stagger home with.
I bought them from a tiny little second-hand store uptown, and discovered they have a wealth of old crafting magazines. Quilting, sewing, cross-stitch, knitting, all kinds of wonderful things! I got huge issues of McCall's Needlework from the 1980s for 50 cents each, and even managed to find an issue of Piecework from 2004 for only $2. I came away with more than 10 magazines, all bursting with information and ideas, for $8.75. And I had to leave so many behind. I'll be going back when I get a little more spare money.
In other crafty news, I managed to find some very nice material at another thrift store yesterday, $2 for about enough material to make two or three pillowcases. It's nice stuff, thin cotton in various shades of blue, and when I saw it I knew it was destined to become a set of pillowcases.
Whether or not I'll end up giving those pillowcases to somebody or keeping them for myself is another matter altogether.
I also found a cone cone of white sewing thread, easily 5 lbs of it, for $3. I don't think I'll ever need to buy more white thread again! Not unless I start talking up quilting in a big way!
Though speaking of, I have been tempted lately to buy a few bags of the mixed quarters that are sometimes at the thrift store, and practice my sewing and quilting by making some nice decorative cushions. Just another thing to buy when I have some spare money, I suppose.
I shouldn't be writing about all this stuff! I should be doing it! Or at the very least, reading about it. Now, where's that Piecework..?
